Food Lawyers Face Challenges

The Winter 2017 issue of Food Cosmetics & Nutraceuticals (American Bar Association) contains an article written by MS in Food Safety alumnus, Charles (Charley) F. Woodhouse, Esq. The article is entitled "Food Lawyers Face Challenges from 21st Century Logistics, FSMA, and the Clean Label Movement," and focuses on the impact of the "Clean Label" and "Minimal Processing" movements on Food Industry Supply-Chains.

"Also" says Charley, "you will want to see the article by Attorney John Johnson of the Benjamin England law firm on FDA's authority to detain import shipments and then refuse food imports." Read both articles here.

Charley is a Fall 2011 graduate of the Online Master of Science in Food Safety. He was an adjunct professor of law at Michigan State University, teaching "US Food Imports: Process, Regulation, and Food Safety" in the LLM Food Law Program during the 2013 and 2014 academic years, and in 2015 began studies in the graduate program in Food Packaging at MSU (Materials Science & Engineering) with a research topic of "Regulation of Nanomaterials in 'Informative' and 'Responsive' Polymeric Food Packaging Materials".

Charley is senior partner for the firm Woodhouse Shanahan PA, Attorneys-at-Law, who specialize in Food Industry Regulatory Compliance.  He holds a BA from Dartmouth, a MBA from Wharton, a JD from Rutgers, a MS in Food Safety from Michigan State, and Graduate Certificates in both Food Law and Food Packaging, also from Michigan State.

Charley serves as Co-Editor of the American Bar Association's "Food Cosmetics and Nutraceuticals News" and is a Professional Member of the Institute of Food Technologists.  His recent peer-reviewed articles include:"Preparing for the Food Safety Modernization Act", SciTech Lawyer, Summer 2014; "Sanitary Transportation of Food", Food, Cosmetics & Nutraceuticals (FCN), Spring 2016; and "Food Supply-Chain Structures: Liability, Guarantees, Insurance, and Indemnification", FCN, Winter 2017.  He also serves Of Counsel to the Customs and International Trade law firm Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, P.A. for specialized food regulatory matters.
